ANGEL (YUXIA) WANG, VIOLINIST
Renowned violinist Angel Wang has established herself as a violinist of exceptional ability in both China and Canada in solo, chamber and orchestral settings. In China she was a member of the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra and established the Angel Trio, performing chamber music throughout the country.
In Canada she has performed with the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Opera and was concertmaster for a run of La Traviata. As a soloist she has been heard on television and has appeared as a judge for numerous television competitions and festivals. Angel Wang performed in the Toronto production of the hit musical The Sound of Music and has performed with the Elora Festival singers and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.
A veteran of both stage and screen Angel Wang has recorded extensively for the film industry in China and in North America. She is also active in the Toronto recording scene for CDs, commercials and movies. Angel Wang has also appeared in concert with such notables as singer Roger Hodgson and international piano star Richard Clayderman. Most recently she was the concertmaster for Richard Clayderman’s 2017 and 2018 and 2019 all the sold out North American concert tours.
Her most recent passion has been the founding of the Chinese Canadian Society for the Arts (CCSA), a charitable organization for which she is also the artistic director and principal soloist. The CCSA Orchestra's mandate is to promote Chinese and Western music and composers. With the CCSA Angel has performed to sold out audiences in such concert halls such as the George Weston Concert Hall, Koerner Hall and the Beijing Concert Hall in China. The concert in China was at the invitation of the Chinese government in 2019. Her organization also does a great deal of work with young performers, offering masterclasses and performing opportunities to aspiring young violinists alongside her on the concert stage.
To continue offering her audiences music in the challenging times of the past year she has recorded and streamed video performances of Vivaldi and Beethoven, as well as various Christmas and Holiday arrangements and several very famous traditional Chinese works such as the Galloping Horse and the Red of the Star.
COREY GEMMELL, VIOLINIST
Corey Lyle Gemmell, violinist, currently makes his home in Markham, Ontario. He has distinguished himself as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Canada, Germany, the United States and China.
Mr. Gemmell is concertmaster for the Burlington Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Toronto, Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir Orchestra. He frequently performs in this role with the National Academy Orchestra, the Elora Festival Orchestra, the Mandle Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto Concert Orchestra and Esprit Orchestra.
As a soloist Mr. Gemmell has performed much of the standard repertoire for violin and orchestra. In recent years his he has performed concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Prokofiev and Vivaldi. In 2017 Mr. Gemmell was called upon on 5 days’ notice to perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra substituting for an indisposed soloist. He repeated this feat 2 months later for another indisposed violinist with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra. In 2020 Mr. Gemmell performed movements of the Beethoven Violin Concerto and Winter from the Four Seasons in livestreamed performances with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and the Burlington Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Gemmell is an avid chamber musician. In July 0f 2020 he performed Bach’s Sonata No. 2 in A minor for Solo Violin in a livestreamed concert at the University Club of Toronto in an event titled “Triumvirate”, alongside cellist Tom Mueller and pianist Richard Herriott. He is currently the violinist for Ensemble Vivant. Mr. Gemmell is a frequent guest artist with New Music Concerts, with whom he performed and led workshops at the National Conservatory of Beijing in 2016 and has been a guest on such series as the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga, Array Music and the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society.
Mr. Gemmell is proud to be a faculty member at the National Music Camp of Canada and is also on faculty at the Great Lakes International Summer Music Institute at Algoma University. He has taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Western Ontario and is a member of the Royal College of Examiners. He has led masterclasses and workshops and adjudicated at music festivals across Canada.
Mr. Gemmell was a contributor to a series of recordings entitled “The Mozart Effect”, for whom he recorded several of Mozart’s Violin Sonatas and many of Mozart’s String Quartets. Mr. Gemmell has also participated in several video projects with the Canadian Chinese Society for the Arts along with his wife and Artistic Director of the CCSA, violinist Angel Wang. He was one of the contributing artists to the Royal Conservatory of Music’s complete violin syllabus on compact disc in 2013. With Ensemble Vivant Mr. Gemmell has completed two albums and several video projects in the Fall of 2020. He has also recorded other works by Mozart, Brahms, Ravel, Robert A. Baker as well as numerous movie and commercial recordings.
Mr. Gemmell performs on a violin made for him in 2005 by renowned Toronto luthier, Hratch Armenious as well as a violin made in Milan in 1907 by Cipriano Briani.
